Recovery of Logged Tropical Montane Rainforests as Potential Habitats for Hainan Gibbon

چکیده
As the world’s rarest ape, main threat facing Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus) is habitat degradation and loss caused by human disturbances. The insufficient area continuous disturbance in most of existing habitats can hardly maintain future recovery development population. A large secondary tropical montane rainforest was retained Bawangling National Nature Reserve after disturbance. Therefore, it great significance to study these forests for protection restoration habitat. To explore rainforests different disturbances, whether they have potential serve as gibbon, we calculated four dynamic indexes (including recruitment rate, mortality/loss relative growth rate turnover rate) abundance basal total community food plants based on data from two censuses recovered nearly 45 years disturbances (clear-cutting selective-logging) old-growth forest rainforest. results are follows: (1) There were no significant differences rates, mortality rates between clear-cutting forests, selectively logged forests. (2) Abundance, species small (1 < DBH ? 10 cm) medium (10 30 disturbed higher, while those (DBH ? lower than (3) For common occurring all three kinds communities, trees higher that forest. Our research demonstrates lack key limiting factor mountain at present. However, has transform into suitable through targeted management due high small- medium-sized plants.

How does litter quality affect the community of soil protists (testate amoebae) of tropical montane rainforests?
Litter quality and diversity are major factors structuring decomposer communities. However, little is known on the relationship between litter quality and the community structure of soil protists in tropical forests. We analyzed the diversity, density, and community structure of a major group of soil protists of tropical montane rainforests, that is, testate amoebae. Litterbags containing pure ...
متن کاملForest structure and composition of previously selectively logged and non-logged montane forests at Mt. Kilimanjaro
The montane forests of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania have been subjected to a long history of selective logging. However, since 1984 logging of indigenous trees is prohibited. Today, these forests allow us to evaluate the long-term effects of selective logging. We mapped the height and diameter at breast height (DBH) of all trees >10 cm DBH on 10 sites of 0.25 ha. Five sites represent non-logge...
متن کاملTropical rainforests: Diversity begets diversity
Tropical rainforests exhibit an extraordinarily high level of biological diversity. A new study shows that the patterns of seedling survival surrounding parent trees are responsible in large part for this amazing diversity.
متن کاملFour New Vining Species of Solanum (Dulcamaroid Clade) from Montane Habitats in Tropical America
BACKGROUND Solanum (Solanaceae), with approximately 1500 species, is one of the largest genera of flowering plants, and has a centre of diversity in the New World tropics. The genus is divided into 13 major clades, of which two, the Dulcamaroid clade and the "African Non-Spiny" clade, exhibit vine morphology with twining petioles. I am currently preparing a worldwide monograph of these two grou...
متن کاملThe Potential of Tropical Agro-Industrial by-Products as a Functional Feed for Poultry
Following the ban of synthetic antibiotics as antimicrobial agents and growth promoters, poultry nutritionists are now trying to find antibiotic substitutes. Agro-industrial by-products are abundant in tropical countries and have been used as the alternatives to conventional feedstuffs in poultry rations. These by-products are also known to contain several bioactive compounds such as oligosacch...
